Subtle Rantings

I know you’ve all been there. Most of you have probably been guilty of it. I’m talking about driving while talking on your cell phone. I think there are very few other things that make my blood boil as much as seeing some schmuck in the left lane going the exact speed limit and not paying any attention at all to their surroundings because he’s on his cell phone.

When accidents occur I can’t help but wonder if there was a person talking on a cell phone involved. I feel so sad and angry for the victims of these unnecessary car accidents. As a motorcyclist, I have been almost killed numerous times by these unaware, self-serving would-be-murderers. I don’t think there is enough room here for me to explain how much I really, really don’t like people who talk on their phones and drive. Other than for the sheer fact of the danger it creates, I also can’t stand cell phone drivers because of the inefficiency it creates on our roadways. I will save those comments for another posting though when I talk about people driving in the left lane.

Having said all this, I still don’t think we need legislation dictating to people they can’t drive and talk on a cell phone at the same time unless they are using a hands free kit. You may be shocked since I hate cell phone drivers so much. You must also remember I am also a huge limited-government proponent. Why pass legislation that’s not even going to be enforced? Tell me the last time you’ve seen or even heard a police officer actually giving someone a citation for talking on their phone without a headset? Yeah, I can’t think of a single time either.

So here’s the funny part. The State Senator that was responsible for getting the cell-phone-ban legislation passed in California recently got involved in an accident. While on her cell phone. I hope she was issued a citation by the officer responding to the accident. Since all injuries were minor, I smiled when I read this story as the irony is just to great.
