Capital Punishment
There are many who are opposed to capital punishment. The reasons range from the belief that it’s immoral, mistaken imprisonment of the convicted, cost to the taxpayers and the list goes on. I however, am a staunch believer in capital punishment. While I haven’t ironed out all the details, the first “draft” of my policy might consist of the convicted receiving three appeals through which he could plead his case. If a person can’t manage to get his conviction overturned in three separate trials, not counting the original trial that convicted him in the first place, then I guess it’s just not his day.
All that to say the fact that we’re even having a trial for John Couey is preposterous. You’ll remember he’s the man who kidnapped, brutally raped and then murdered 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford. Her blood was found in his trailer on his mattress (blood from her brutal raping). His fingerprints were on the garbage bags in which she was wrapped and then buried alive. Also, the type of wire used to tie her up was the same type of wire found in Couey’s trailer.
However, the defense has entered a “Not Guilty” plea and is using Couey’s supposed “mental illness” as one of their arguments. They are also claiming Couey offered confessions and other evidence when first incarcerated, however, since no legal representation was present, they are requesting those statements be thrown out. Now before that feeling that is supposed to be the tugging at your heart takes over, let me remind you that Mr. Couey is a prior sex offender. Obviously if his previous imprisonment has not “rehabilitated” him then why would another stint in prison rehabilitate him? This man serves no other purpose to mankind except a complete and utter threat and drain on our judicial system, prison resources and taxpayers money.
When Couey is convicted, as I know he will be, his execution should take place within 30 days. That’s at least one thing the Iraqis have done properly. I ask anyone who disagrees to post their comments here and explain why they feel this man deserves to live. There are hundreds like this man on Death Row and no reason they should still be alive wasting our prison resources, much less our government dollars which are already in short supply. Capital punishment is necessary and it’s not because of justice or vengeance. It’s about showing criminals there are consequences, terminal consequences for committing the most heinous crimes. Only then will we see a real reduction in crime. Only once it has been deglamourized and deglorified.
